“Unteatru, Mobile Theatre” addresses the problem of poor access to theatre, especially in small towns and rural areas. Given that around 70% of Romania’s population rarely or never goes to the theatre, we believe that the lack of infrastructure is the main obstacle in increasing theatre consumption.
Considering that building new theatres in places where very few such institutions exist would be far too ambitious, we will turn a car into a theatre stage. This will helps us travel to twelve cities and towns where Saxon communities live. On this tour we will present a performance focusing on Saxon communities travelling to and settling in Transylvania, a historical fact with extensions in myth and local legends. In support of the show and the presentation of Saxon culture, we will also organise twelve photo exhibitions with portraits of people of culture with German origins. The entire set design of the event spaces will be created together with a Norwegian artist. In parallel, an extensive cultural mentoring programme will be run to develop the team’s expertise both in art production and project management.
The value of the grant is 965.709 RON / 196.059,88 EUR. The project will be implemented in Bucharest and tour in the cities of Brașov, Sighișoara, Mediaș and Rupea, and in the villages of Șona, Hoghilag, Prod, Porumbacu de Sus, Viscri, Biertan, Richiș and Cisnădioara, for a duration of 18 months (November 2022 – April 2024).

The EEA Grants represent the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway towards a green, competitive and inclusive Europe. There are two overall objectives: reduction of economic and social disparities in Europe, and to strengthen bilateral relations between the donor countries and 15 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltics. The three donor countries cooperate closely with the EU through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). The donors have provided €3.3 billion through consecutive grant schemes between 1994 and 2014. For the period 2014-2021, the EEA Grants amount to €1.55 billion.

RO-CULTURE is implemented in Romania by the Ministry of Culture through the Project Management Unit. The Programme aims at strengthening social and economic development through cultural cooperation, cultural entrepreneurship and cultural heritage management. The total budget amounts to almost 34 million EUR.
